Acting Class - How To Find The Character

Another day at acting class and the nervousness is starting to wear away. Tonight I was playing Beth, she's a heart broken ex of Chuck's, the ex-boyfriend that wants her dog. The objective of the scene was to first figure out what Beth's ex wants and then be mortified that he would even ask for her dog. In the scene, I listened to Chuck as I realized he wanted my dog after breaking up with me. I was hurt, angry and stern that he was never going to get my pouch for any amount of money. Beth even goes so far to say,"Not if I was in a wheelchair and you were the last asshole on the planet". The class was saying how well I portrayed a b**ch, which is weird because I am usually the peace-maker in my family. How did I even know where to start to play this role? Then I realized that I grabbed this character from a person I knew throughout my childhood. So even if I don't believe I am this person in everyday life doesn't mean that restricts me from playing the role.
